Thailand Update

23 Dec

Hey guys!

Here’s a little update and I guess some prayer request!

We have been in Thailand for a bit more than one week now. It’s really different but really good at the same time! We are staying in a small town called Phrao which consists of mostly Thais who don’t speak English and little foreigners.

We was teaching at a Kindergarden called Little Candles which is owned by our previous Youth pastor. There are three Christian teahcers at the Kindagarden which is pretty cool. There are two other teachers who are not Christians and CAN speak engligh, which is REALLY rare! So please pray that we’ll will have opportunities to have spiritual conversations with them.

Alan has already had a little spiritual conversation with one of them. So, pray for that! We have also been teaching at Phrao High School.  Pray that through our actions they will realise how different we are and question our beliefs. We are not allowed to directly evangelise teachers there but if the topic of religion comes up, we can share our faith. Hehehe. Today we did the Everything skit in front of the whole school for their Christmas concert. Please pray that they will understand the message and think about it. Pray that the Holy Spirit will work in their hearts!

Finally, please pray for our team as they are having conflicts etc!

A Hunger for God

4 Dec

Following from the book review last night I thought I would share the links with you – the second one is specifically the link to online books – quite handy and… FREE!

Again the book I shared on was “A Hunger for God”

http://www.desiringgod.org/

http://www.desiringgod.org/resource-library/online-books/by-title

We’re now heading into the holidays so it’s a great opportunity to use your spare time to seek the Lord.  I’m aware most of us probably won’t cause ultimately – we don’t care enough.  So I’m going to rant a bit here in the hopes to encourage someone towards the pursuit of a deeper intimacy with our Heavenly Father – cause He is so worthy!

Lately, I’ve been thinking about Psalms 73:25-26:

Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides You.  My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

And also Psalms 16:11

You make known to me the path of life; inYour presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

I won’t expand on those too much cause I’ll end up writing a thesis… But just think deeply about the implications of those two Psalms.  These holidays I know we will seek many things for entertainment and enjoyment – and there is nothing wrong with most of that – BUT be mindful – are we selling ourselves short?  Can anything that we fill our lives with measure up to the fullness of joy?  Or are we so dulling our spiritual senses where we are so satisfied with this world that we miss the blessings and privelege of relationship with God, or worse still don’t even care?  Are we not even hungry for God?  Are we more concerned about the things of this world than the things of heaven? And most importantly, are we giving God the place in our lives and honour that He alone deserves?

I hope God would graciously open our eyes to His infinite worth and excellence – that we might pursue Him, experience Him and love Him as He deserves.

If you feel bored or lifeless this holidays – give all you can to be with THE Life-giver and Joy-creator.

“In [His] presence is fullness of joy”

“Entertainment is the devil’s substitute for joy” – Leonard Ravenhill

Thoughts…

19 Nov

A common saying that is said in the evangelical church is this.

‘Make us more Christ-like’
‘Pray that I\we may know you more’

A couple of questions that came up after listening to a sermon.

If someone spends a day with you, do you think they will turn to you and go wow… I feel like I’ve hung out with Jesus?

Why do you want to know God more? Do you want to just know more about God or do you want to be known by God?

Knowledge of God is nothing, Knowledge of God knowing you… thats something special… so very special… Jeremiah 9:23-24

Edit: Please don’t take me as we shouldn’t know God. We do and should study the word and through the Bible see who God is and respond! (emphasis on the respond) But we should not boast in that, or see that (attaining knowledge) as our ‘christian duty’ or something to strive for.

Feel free to comment ! 🙂

19 Nov

Hi All!

Was just wanting to share what God’s shown me in this past couple days here in Singapore in hopes that it will encourage you as it has for me.

The plane ride over was alright, the guy behind me kept shuffling which kept shaking my chair. I couldn’t really sleep much so I read ‘Worship by the Book’ by D.A. Carson fantastic book definitely worth a read

The books talks about the biblical basis of ‘worship’ redefining worship and has various other people from different denominations putting in their 2cents worth.

Also just praying to see where God is doing in terms of youth group and what his calling me personally and just kinda waiting for upon Him. I wish I do this more often, a calming down, forgetting about everything and just wanting to hear God, I too often get caught up in the ‘world’ in doing things the cycle of work, study, exams church

Because my body clock is quite out of whack still I’ve been waking up at 5am. With not much else to do I decided to go through Ephesians. A few points I want to flesh out (feel free to comment back and discuss)

1. Christian life is a constant Spiritual battle and we must be not only acknowledge it but be prepared aswell.
2. We need to realise the hope to which we have been called and live in hope of the return of Christ.
3. Christ reigns over all things… Christ reigns over all things…
4. Christ came down to save us, rescue us, redeem us from our sins, but he came down to have a relationship with us so that is why he gave up his life for us. An atoning Sacrifice for us. He dwelled amongst us
5. Christ died for all, that we may have unity with all people regardless of background, race, gender.
6. The Holy Spirit dwells in all who believe. The Church is a house of forgiven sinners.

We are individually and collectively a temple. And when we look back into the old Testament we see the Temple is also a place where God wants to display his love to the world. or Declare it aloud is another phrased used.

Declare is like a making known to all people. It is almost like a public announcement, that we are to declare God to all people.

We are his showcase of love to the world. It is a very weird thought and it makes me kind of giddy.

So as you go out this week, think how can I \ we display God’s love to the people we interact with.

Will catch you all when I return except for people on project and to those people GOOD LUCK!

Shalom

James

Theatre Sports Night

30 Oct

As November the 19th approaches, the highly anticipated and popular games night is returning. This year we will be putting on our improvising hats and getting ready to bring thunderous roars of laughter in our church. The legendary Chewbacca will return to us once again as we perform many fun games of…

Theatre Sports!

For those who don’t know or never played, improvisation is a form of acting that is spontaneous and completely made up. Theatre sports is a form of improvisational theatre which uses the format of a competition for dramatic effect. Opposing teams can perform scenes based on audience suggestions, with ratings by a panel of judges.

The Theatre Sports night will be held on Friday the 19th of November at our usual SCUC Youth Group Hall.
So keep that date free and bring your friends along! It will be a night of fun and laughter!

In the meantime, watch these hilarious video from Whose line is it anyways to get some ideas of great improvisation!
