Image of God

13 Sep

Hello All!

Nice new home we have here on WordPress, Good work to Alan for making the transition across!

Thought I would share a something nice and short.

We belong to God

Matthew 22:15-22 (New International Version)

Paying Taxes to Caesar

15Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

18But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, 20and he asked them, “Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?”

21″Caesar’s,” they replied.
Then he said to them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

22When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.

So the coins had Caesar’s face on it, so they belong to Caesar that makes sense.

But we are made in the Image of God so … we belong to God?

What does belonging to God mean?

God created us in His image, both male and female, Colossians  1:16  says ‘16For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.

Here is the issue that a lot of people struggle with. How do we belong to God?

Is it an automatic inclusion if we are human, just because we bear God’s image? No because we are fallen. Sin has distorted our image of God, tainted and tarnished us. The image is still there, but it is flawed. I can expand on this but for brevity I will leave it here.

So let’s go back and think about the passage. Caesar’s face is on the denarius, but it is Man’s choice to pay the taxes back man could very well hold the money for himself. (in short it isn’t automatic!)

It is our responding to Christ’s love by accepting Jesus as God and savior, John 3:16-21.

It involves us:
1. Putting on a new self – Colossians 3:9-10
2. Keep being transformed into Christ likeness – 2 Corinthians 3:18
3. Hoping in Christ Return –Philippians 3:20-21

In this way we will belong to God.

Have a blessed week!

Comment away! 🙂
